It is the governmental center of county of Bottineau County and is positioned just over ten miles south of the Canada United States border.

The town/city is home to Dakota College at Bottineau.

Attractions in Bottineau include the Bottineau Winter Park and "Tommy Turtle", the world's biggest turtle, which has turn into a landmark for the city.

The town name was changed to Bottineau in 1884 with respect to Pierre Bottineau (c.1814-1895), a Metis pioneer, hunter, and trapper who became a prosperous territory speculator.

The town was originally positioned about 1.5 miles north of its current location.
