Enumeration Bureau recorded the populace at 18,331 in the 2010 census. It estimated the 2015 populace at 21,382. Located athwart the Missouri River from the state capital of Bismarck, Mandan is a core town/city of the Bismarck-Mandan Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The town/city was titled after the historic indigenous Mandan of the area. The Mandan are part of the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Reservation, spanning the upper Missouri River in the part of the state.
